Hedonism is a school of thought which argues that pleasure is the only intrinsic good. This is often used as a justification for evaluating actions in terms of how much pleasure and how little pain (i.e. suffering) they produce.

In very simple terms, a hedonist strives to maximize this net pleasure (pleasure minus pain).

Placement issues…

As part of our MA we are required to carry out a placement in an institution that aids or research or production skills. I applied for a place in the neurological research department of Beaumont Hospital or to spend time in a second level school in discussion with a group of a ‘younger generation’. Beaumont has since declined, leaving me with the option of the school.

I must carry this out over the next two weeks and struggling to pin down what is I am looking for by going here. My main reason for choosing a school was to gather a group of 13-15 year olds and discuss with them their expectations of technology, their opinions on TV and the internet and how they differ from their elders. This is very similar to how I conducted interviews at the start of the year so I guess I see this as an extension of the research. I plan to do it all through video over two days. First, just as a discussion with them all and the following day, do one to one interviews. This may change as I speak to the students which I guess is not a negative thing.

… Building my space for the interim MA show.

Documentation to follow.

Notes so far: the longer you stare at the colour white, the less white it becomes.

MDF is terribly heavy.

Arduino is difficult.

Your Dublin

“Hello! Open Me”

20 Disposable cameras were placed around Dublin in a stamped addressed envelope. The note on the envelope invited the public to use the camera to show us ‘their Dublin’ and then post these cameras back.

These photos were then available to see on ‘YourDublin.wordpress.com‘.

The aim of this project is to interrupt daily life, invite people to allow us to to see a day in their life and to trust that people will willingly take part in something anonymous. We attempted to connect with strangers in a new way, one where they didn’t know the outcome of what they shot and we had no idea what to expect.

About:

An appreciation of digital media, art & technology and an outlet to publish work. My background has been in design, working mainly in graphic design and layout. I have been layout and design editor and image editor for magazines previously. Recently I have been pursuing the photographic route. I have just started an MA in Art in the Digital World in NCAD. My proposal is loosely based around the social implications of the web 2.0 generation and comparing the real -vs- the unreal. Recent reading has brought me to look closely at generation 'Y'. I would like you to keep this in mind when looking at my recent photographs, designs and links.
